Wally 118 Motor Yacht

These days there seems to be plenty of harbors around the world filled with big shinny multi-deck super yachts, owned by dotcom billionaires, European Royal families and of course the Russian oligarchs where one super yacht never quite seems to be enough. Just a few minutes into the Monaco Grand Prix and you can see these big white floating palaces lined up back to back like a city parking lot.

Quite frankly it seems when you have a few million dollars to spend on a yacht, you can have it big and you can have it white. Or, sometimes if you really want to push the boat out (see what I did there) you can have one in blue. Well, that was until Wally Yachts came along.

Founded by a European businessman, and based out of Monte Carlo, Monaco, Wally Yachts was formed in 1994 starting out as a sailing boat design company. More recently they have begun building some of the worlds most distinctive and advanced motor yachts, like their world renowned Wally 118.

Costing $33 million the Wally 118 boasts some pretty impressive features like its 3 x Vericor TF50 gas turbine engines producing a combined 17,000 horsepower, providing it’s captain an impressive cruising speed of 60 knots. The range at cruising speed is respectable 300 nautical miles, meaning the 6 guests and 6 crewmembers can island hop until their hearts content.

Partly developed in the Ferrari wind tunnel in Maranello, Italy and constructed out of a lightweight carbon fiber composite the vertical bow is designed to cut through the waves with ease, stability and control. 118 ft in length (where it takes its name from) and with a 39 ft beam the Wally 118 uses 15 gallons of fuel per nautical mile which means is can cost as much as $50 dollars per mile, or, $15,000 for a full tank at cruising speed. But hey, if you can afford the $33 million price tag, what’s $15k between friends?

Albeit very briefly the Wally 118 was featured in the movie ‘The Island’ starring Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson and more recently has been seen on Top Gear. Faced with the choice of which super yacht to buy, I know where my money would be spent.
